Are custom pieces returnable?

Are custom pieces returnable?

Quick Answer
Custom and personalized jewellery is made specifically for the customer, so it is generally treated differently from standard stock items. Typically non-returnable unless there is a manufacturing issue.

Custom jewellery is made specifically for you, not pulled from existing stock, and that makes it structurally different from off-the-shelf merchandise. At Tailor Diamonds, custom and personalised pieces are generally non-returnable once production has been approved and completed, unless there is a manufacturing issue or quality defect. This policy exists for practical reasons rooted in how custom jewellery is made, and it is standard practice across reputable fine jewellers worldwide. With more than 30 years of diamond industry experience, we have developed a consultation and design process specifically designed to prevent regret by ensuring clarity at every stage, before commitments become irreversible.

Why custom pieces are treated differently

When you order a custom ring, our workshop begins a sequence of actions that are not reversible. We source or allocate a specific centre stone that matches your specifications, casting it into production rather than keeping it available for other clients. We cast the setting in your chosen metal, in your chosen size, with your chosen design details. Skilled artisans then hand-set the stones and finish the piece to your specifications. At each step, materials and labour are committed specifically to your project. Unlike a stock item, a finished custom ring cannot simply be returned to inventory and sold to another client, because it was made for your specific choices, size, and preferences.

This is not unique to Tailor Diamonds. It is the universal practice of custom fine jewellers, bespoke tailors, and anyone producing made-to-order goods. The alternative, allowing returns on custom work, would either raise prices significantly for all clients to cover inevitable losses or force workshops to use lower-grade materials to protect themselves. Neither is acceptable in fine jewellery.

How we prevent regret before it can happen

Our entire consultation and design process is structured to minimise the possibility of post-delivery regret. Each stage is a clear decision point, and we do not move to the next stage until you are genuinely comfortable with where we are.

The consultation phase establishes design direction through thorough conversation, reference gathering, and exploration of options. No commitments are made here. You can change direction completely without cost.

Stone selection presents real options with full information, including certificates, photography, video, and sometimes live video calls to examine specific stones. You approve the exact stone before it is allocated to your project.

The CAD rendering stage lets you see the ring in three-dimensional detail before any metal is cut. This is the critical last opportunity to request changes. We encourage clients to study CAD renders carefully, compare them to reference images, and think about how the finished ring will look in real life. Most clients go through one to three rounds of CAD refinement before final approval.

Only after you approve the final CAD design does production begin. At that point, the design is locked and materials are committed.

What constitutes a manufacturing issue

Tailor Diamonds stands behind the craftsmanship of every piece that leaves our workshop. If a ring arrives with a manufacturing issue, we address it promptly at no cost to you. Manufacturing issues include, but are not limited to, insecure prongs, uneven pave, misaligned elements, incorrect measurements compared to the approved design, incorrect stone grades compared to what was promised, surface finishing defects, and any structural flaw that affects wearability or appearance.

If you receive your ring and identify what you believe is a manufacturing issue, please contact us within a reasonable period of delivery. We will review photographs, request the piece back if needed for inspection, and either correct the issue, remake the piece, or provide another appropriate remedy. This commitment is grounded in our confidence in our workshop and our thirty plus years of experience producing fine jewellery at consistent quality.

What does not generally qualify as a manufacturing issue is a change of preference after delivery, such as wishing you had chosen a different metal, shape, or setting. These are design decisions you approved through the CAD process, and they are final once production has proceeded.

Sizing and minor adjustments after delivery

One area where we do offer flexibility is sizing. If a ring arrives and does not fit correctly, many rings can be resized, depending on the design and structure. For most solitaires and simple pave settings, resizing within a modest range is straightforward and often free within a specified period after delivery. For eternity bands, tension settings, and some intricate pave or channel designs, resizing may be limited or impossible due to how the design is constructed. We discuss sizing carefully during consultation and recommend accurate professional sizing before production begins, specifically to avoid this issue.

Other minor post-delivery adjustments, such as minor polishing, prong retipping, or repair of damage unrelated to our workmanship, are often possible as part of our after-sales support. These are discussed case by case.

Stock and non-custom items

Not everything we sell is custom. For stock items such as ready-to-ship pieces from our collections, standard fine jewellery consumer protections apply, subject to the terms stated at purchase. If you purchase a non-custom piece and it does not meet your expectations, please contact us promptly so we can review the specifics under the applicable terms. This distinction matters because it means clients who want the flexibility of return policies can choose stock pieces, while those who want bespoke work understand the trade-off upfront.

Why this policy ultimately serves you

Clients sometimes ask why custom jewellers cannot simply accept returns like retail stores. The honest answer is that allowing returns on custom work would fundamentally change what custom means. It would force us to keep designs generic enough to resell, limit our willingness to produce unusual stones or complex settings, and raise prices across the board. The current structure, careful consultation, full CAD approval, then committed production, allows us to make genuinely personalised pieces at fair prices. It asks in exchange that clients engage thoughtfully with the decision points along the way.

Our three decades of experience tells us that the overwhelming majority of our clients are delighted with their finished rings, because the process was built around ensuring they would be. Our role is to make sure every question is answered, every option is seen, and every commitment is made with full understanding.

How to approach a custom project with confidence

The best way to approach a custom project is to engage fully with the consultation and CAD stages. Ask every question that crosses your mind. Request additional views, photographs, or video. Take time between CAD iterations to sit with the design rather than approving quickly. Discuss concerns openly with your consultant rather than suppressing them. Our team is trained to welcome exactly this kind of engagement because it protects your satisfaction with the finished piece.

Moving forward with clarity

Tailor Diamonds is committed to producing rings you will love for a lifetime. Our policies around custom work reflect the nature of bespoke jewellery and our commitment to craftsmanship, not a lack of care for clients. If you have any questions about how custom orders, returns, or manufacturing standards work before beginning a project, please ask before committing. When you are ready to begin, you can Build Your Ring with full guidance, Browse the Collections for stock options, or Contact Us to discuss any policy questions directly.
